Whether you already play or have never held a club, women’s golf near Barcelona comes down to two practical questions: is the course rated for you, and can you get on it. At La Roca Golf, 30 minutes from the city, all five tees carry an official women’s rating, no handicap is required for lessons or the practice facility, and the club runs Swing i Dones (“Swing and Women”), a women’s fixture with nine dates across the 2026 season.

The essentials in 20 seconds

  • Five starting options on every hole, all five rated for women (course rating 78.1 down to 69.0, slope 142 to 119). You play the yardage that matches your game.
  • No handicap needed to take a lesson, book a taster session or use the practice facility. You will need one for official competitions, not to get started.
  • Equipment included in taster sessions and beginner courses, with rental bags available if you want to practise on your own.
  • Swing i Dones, the club’s women’s fixture, has nine dates in 2026, so there is a standing date in the calendar rather than a one-off event.

Women’s golf in Spain is not a niche

Spain closed 2025 with 317,155 registered golf licences, of which 86,882 belong to women, close to three in ten, and 2,419 more than the previous year. That matters if you are planning a trip: you are not going to be the only woman on the tee sheet, and clubs here are used to it.

At La Roca that shows up in the competition calendar, where Swing i Dones appears nine times a year. It is a fixed slot in the season, not a token gesture.

The course will not play against you

This is the point most worth making, and it applies to visitors and beginners alike.

La Roca Golf is a par 71 with five starting options on every hole, tees 1 through 5. The full course measures 5,976 m (about 6,535 yd) from the longest tee and 4,541 m (about 4,966 yd) from the shortest, a difference of almost 1,500 m. These are not a cut-down version of the layout: they are five ways of playing the same 18 holes, each built around a different carry distance.

All five tees carry an official women’s rating, from a course rating of 78.1 at the longest to 69.0 at the shortest, with slope running from 142 down to 119. In practice that means the course is officially measured for your category from every tee, and rounds played here count towards your handicap.

If you have never played before

The sequence that works is always the same, and it does not start in a pro shop.

A first session. A golf taster session is exactly that: a first contact with a coach, clubs provided, to see whether the game says anything to you. You leave knowing whether you want a second session, which is the only question that matters on day one.

Then some structure. Golf lessons at La Roca Golf Academy follow the GASPS method, which builds technique step by step rather than throwing twenty corrections at you at once. Lessons run both at the practice facility and out on the course, and that second part matters more than it sounds: hitting balls on a range and playing a hole are two different sports until someone teaches you to join them.

And practice in parallel. The training centre covers 27,000 m² with a driving range, approach area, putting green and short holes. For the full picture of the process, our guide on how to start playing golf walks through it step by step.

What a round gives back

A walking round is a full morning of low-impact outdoor activity. The scoping review on golf and health published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine puts the energy expenditure of 18 holes at between 531 and 2,467 kcal, and concludes that golf provides moderate intensity physical activity associated with improved cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic profiles. The benefits of walking the course go well beyond the step count, and our piece on golf and wellness covers the part that does not show up on a tracker.

Frequently asked questions about women’s golf

Do I need a handicap to play at La Roca Golf?
Not for lessons, taster sessions or the practice facility. If you want to play the course itself, tell us your situation when you book and we will confirm what you need.

Which tee should I play?
La Roca Golf has five starting options on every hole, all rated for women. If you are starting out, the shorter tees are the usual choice, and you move up or back as your game changes. The front desk or your coach will point you to the right one on your first visit.

Do I need to bring clubs?
No. Taster sessions and beginner courses include equipment, and rental bags are available for practice. If you are visiting from abroad, that saves you travelling with a bag.

What is Swing i Dones?
It is La Roca Golf’s women’s fixture, held nine times in 2026: 18 February, 11 March, 15 April, 20 May, 10 June, 23 September, 7 October, 18 November and 2 December.

Can I play with people who are better than me?
Yes, and that is exactly what the five starting options are for. Everyone plays from the tee that suits their game and moves through the hole at a similar pace. Golf is one of the few sports where that genuinely works.

Start your golf at La Roca

What separates most women who think about playing golf from the ones who end up playing is not ability, equipment or time. It is having a specific first date in the diary. If you want yours to be here, La Roca Golf is 30 minutes from Barcelona, clubs included, coach in front of you, on a course where every shot is an opportunity, not a sentence.
