Starting to play golf is easier than you think. No prior experience needed, no obligation to buy equipment on day one, and no requirement to memorise an entire rulebook: all you need to get started is curiosity and a willingness to step onto the course.

Golf has a reputation for being complex and exclusive. But that image belongs to another era. Today, anyone can hit their first shots in an afternoon, enjoy the experience and fall in love with one of the most rewarding sports there is.

This guide tells you exactly how to get started: what you need, what to expect in your first sessions, and how to progress at your own pace until you’re playing a full 18-hole round with confidence.

Why start playing golf now?

Golf is far more than a sport — it’s a way to spend time outdoors, switch off from work and move your body more than you might expect. According to the Golf & Health Project, walking an 18-hole round is equivalent to between 7 and 10 kilometres, with all the cardiovascular benefits that brings.

But beyond the health perks, golf offers something few sports can match: you can compete with players of any level thanks to the handicap system. That means within your first few months you can already play alongside more experienced friends on genuinely equal terms. It’s a sport where your level doesn’t create a barrier — it creates a connection.

And if you’re visiting or living near Barcelona, you have the added privilege of playing surrounded by nature, with outstanding weather almost all year round.

What you need to get started: the basic equipment

One of the first questions every beginner asks is: “Do I need to buy clubs?” The short answer is no, at least not at first.

At most courses you can hire a set of clubs for your first sessions at the driving range or practice centre. That way you can try the sport without any upfront investment. At La Roca Golf, we offer club hire so you don’t have to worry about equipment from day one.

When you decide you’re ready to buy your own clubs, here’s the essential kit for a beginner:

  • Starter set: includes a wood, mid-irons (5, 7, 9) and a putter. Avoid professional sets — they’re expensive and won’t make you improve any faster.
  • Golf glove: protects your hand and improves your grip. It’s the cheapest accessory and one of the most useful.
  • Practice balls: buy second-hand or in budget packs — you will lose them at first, and that’s completely normal.
  • Comfortable clothing and grip shoes: you don’t need specific golf attire to begin, but you do need footwear that won’t slip on wet grass.

First lessons: why they make all the difference

Golf has a genuine learning curve. It’s not like riding a bike — hitting shots without guidance can build bad habits that are hard to undo later. One or two lessons with a professional at the start will save you months of frustration.

In a beginner’s lesson you’ll learn:

  1. The correct grip — the foundation of every good shot
  2. Stance and alignment — how to position yourself before you swing
  3. The basic swing movement — kept simple and manageable from day one
  4. How to use different clubs — from the putter to the woods

At La Roca Golf Academy we offer individual and group lessons tailored to complete beginners. We provide all the equipment — you just need to show up. You can find out more about lessons and book your first session here.

The driving range: your best tool for improvement

Before heading out for a full round, you’ll want to spend time at the driving range or practice centre. It’s where golfers of all levels work on their game at their own pace, without the pressure of other players waiting behind.

At the driving range you can:

  • Work on your swing with different clubs
  • Practise short game (chipping and pitching) in dedicated areas
  • Improve your putting on the practice green
  • Use technology like Toptracer to track the exact trajectory of your shots and measure distances in real time

The basic rules you need to know

Golf has an extensive rulebook, but to get started you only need to grasp a handful of core concepts.

The aim of the game is to complete each hole in as few shots as possible. Your score is measured against the par of each hole — the number of strokes an expert player is expected to need.

Some essential terms:

  • Birdie: one shot under par for the hole. Excellent.
  • Bogey: one shot over par. Perfectly normal for a beginner.
  • Handicap: an index that measures your level and allows you to compete fairly alongside more experienced players. The lower the number, the better you play.
  • Course etiquette: call out before you swing, keep up the pace of play, repair the turf and stay quiet while others are hitting. These are the unwritten rules that make golf the sport it is.

Your first round: what to expect

When you feel ready to step onto the course, there are options designed exactly for this moment. A golf introduction experience is a guided session where you play your first holes alongside an instructor or club member who helps you navigate the course with confidence.

No rush, no pressure. The goal is simply to enjoy the course, the surroundings and the feeling of completing a hole for the first time. It’s one of those moments golfers never forget.

When you’re ready to take it further, you can book your first full round at La Roca Golf and start exploring all 18 holes at your own pace.

From beginner to regular player: the journey

One of the most motivating things about golf is that progress is visible and measurable. Every time you lower your average score or pull off a shot you couldn’t manage a few weeks ago, the satisfaction is real.

A typical beginner’s journey looks something like this:

  1. Weeks 1–4: beginner lessons + practice at the driving range
  2. Months 2–3: first outings on the easier holes of the course
  3. Months 4–6: first complete 18-hole round
  4. From month 6 onwards: applying for an official handicap through the R&A and joining the competitive side of the game
