Golf over 50 does not depend on power or on athletic fitness. It depends on choosing the right starting option, walking at your own pace and learning the technique from someone who knows how to teach it. It is one of the few sports you can pick up from scratch at 55 and still play at 80, and that age range is exactly where the game is most played. The most complete scientific review on golf and health, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, puts it plainly: golf is particularly popular among middle-aged and older adults, a group that is generally less active than younger people.

The essentials in 20 seconds

  • No experience needed. You start with 25 or 50 minute lessons at La Roca Golf Academy, equipment included, without ever having held a club.
  • You choose the distance. La Roca Golf offers five starting options on every hole: the round goes from 5,976 metres off the farthest to 4,541 off the one closest to the green.
  • Walking is optional. Push trolley, electric trolley or buggy, your call each day. Walking 18 holes means between 11,245 and 16,667 steps, according to that same BJSM review.
  • A Senior Federated green fee exists, cheaper than the standard 18-hole rate. The Spanish federation counts players as senior from the age of 50 reached during the year, and a valid licence is required, so ask at reception whether yours qualifies.

Why golf suits you so well after 50

By your mid-fifties, most of the sports you played when you were younger start to punish your knees. Golf works the other way: moderate intensity physical activity, no impact, sustained over three or four hours outdoors. The BJSM review links that practice to improved cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic profiles, and points to a potential contribution to longer life expectancy. The same authors put the energy cost of an 18-hole round at between 531 and 2,467 kcal, depending on how and at what pace you play.

It is worth saying what the science does not yet claim. That review explicitly calls for more research into golf’s contribution to muscular strengthening, balance and falls prevention: reasonable hypotheses, not proven conclusions. What is documented is already plenty, which is moving your body for several hours, in the sun, walking on soft ground.

Then there is the part no study measures well. You play in groups of three or four, you talk for four hours, and you end up having something to eat at the clubhouse. If you want to go deeper, our blog has articles on golf and longevity and on the benefits of walking the course.

Starting from scratch after 50

There is a widespread and mostly false idea that golf has to be learned as a child. Learning later has drawbacks (less flexibility, fewer years ahead) and real advantages too: more patience, more consistency and a far better ability to understand what the coach is telling you rather than copying it blindly.

The sensible path looks like this:

  1. One individual lesson first. At La Roca Golf Academy individual lessons run 25 or 50 minutes, equipment included. That first contact tells you whether the movement feels comfortable and whether the game hooks you.
  2. A few weeks at the training centre. Entry is a practice green fee, cheaper from mid-afternoon. That is where the swing gets built, with no scorecard and nobody waiting behind you.
  3. Your first holes. Once ball contact starts repeating, you go out on the course. There is no need to play 18 holes on day one.

If you prefer a more structured entry, the beginner golf course covers the basics in a group at a pace designed for newcomers. And for the full picture of the learning path, our guide on how to start playing golf walks through it step by step.

Play the right tee, not the one you think you should

This is the single piece of advice that saves the most shots for a golfer over 50, and the one most often ignored. La Roca Golf has five starting options on every hole, and the gap between the farthest and the one closest to the green is almost 1,500 metres: 5,976 metres from the first, 4,541 from the fifth. They are two different golf courses.

As swing speed drops with the years, playing off your lifelong tee turns every par 4 into a disguised par 5: you reach the green with a long iron, you miss, shots pile up and the round drags. Moving forward one or two starting options restores the course to the scale it was designed for, and the whole round changes character. It is not lowering the bar, it is playing the distance your swing actually covers today.

The layout helps here: a flat, compact estate, wide fairways that forgive a mishit and a clear view from tee to green, so you see where the ball lands and walk very little between holes. To understand how all this translates onto your card, our article on what a golf handicap is gives you the framework.

Walking, trolley or buggy

Walking the round is where much of the health benefit sits, but it is not a requirement or a badge of honour. The options at La Roca Golf:

  • Push trolley. You push the bag instead of carrying it. For many golfers over 50 this is the change that keeps them walking all 18 holes.
  • Electric trolley. The trolley moves itself and you walk alongside, carrying nothing. All the walking, none of the load on your back.
  • Buggy. Available by the round or as a ten-round pass. For hot days, for injuries, or simply to play without accumulated fatigue. You still play the same shots.

A common mix among experienced players: walk in spring and autumn, take a buggy in July and August. There is also a 9-hole green fee for afternoons when you fancy golf but not four hours of it, and a Twilight rate for late tee times: the hour from which it applies is announced as the season changes, so ask when you book.

Which rates bring the round down

After 50 there are three ways to play for less than the standard 18-hole green fee, and they are worth knowing before you book:

  • Senior Federated green fee. The Royal Spanish Golf Federation places the senior category, men’s and women’s alike, at 50 years of age reached during the current year. You just need a valid licence.
  • Nine holes. Half the round, half the afternoon, the same course.
  • Twilight. For late tee times, when the course empties out and the light is the best of the day.

You will find every option with current prices on our services and rates page. All green fees include a security-code locker in the changing rooms, and club hire means you can fly in without your own set, which matters if you are combining golf with a trip to Barcelona.

Coming back to golf after years away

It is a more common profile than you would think: people who played in their thirties, stopped for work or family, and come back in their late fifties with a dusty bag in the garage. Three things that make the return smoother:

  • Check your grips first. They are the only part of the club you touch and they harden over the years. Replacing them is cheap and transforms how an old set feels.
  • Start with the short game. It is where losing distance matters least and where feel returns fastest. Our article on the short game goes straight at it.
  • Give the training centre two or three sessions before heading out. The body remembers the movement, but it needs a few dozen balls to put it back in order.

Frequently asked questions about golf over 50

Is it too late to start golf at 60?
No. Golf can be learned at any age because it rests on technique and rhythm rather than power. The BJSM review on golf and health notes that the sport is particularly popular among middle-aged and older adults. With regular lessons, you will be playing your first holes with some understanding within a few months.

Which tee should a senior golfer play?
The one that leaves your approach shots at a distance you can cover with a mid iron. At La Roca Golf, moving forward one or two of the five starting options on each hole is usually enough to restore that scale.

Are there senior rates at La Roca Golf?
Yes. The Senior Federated green fee costs less than the standard 18-hole rate. The Spanish federation’s senior category starts at 50 years of age reached during the current year, and a valid federation licence is required, so check at reception whether your national licence is accepted. Current prices are always on the services and rates page.

Can I play with back or knee problems?
Many golfers do, using a buggy or an electric trolley to avoid carrying weight. The specific decision belongs to your doctor rather than to an article: check before you start and tell your coach so the movement can be adapted.

How far do you walk over 18 holes?
Between 11,245 and 16,667 steps according to the British Journal of Sports Medicine review, which puts the energy cost of a full round at 531 to 2,467 kcal. Riding in a buggy brings that down considerably, to around 6,280 steps.
