Summer golf in Barcelona has a time of day, and it isn’t midday. It’s late afternoon, when the sun drops, the pine shadows stretch across the fairway and the course empties out. Late in the afternoon this is a different course. The heat has eased, there’s a bit of air moving and the light comes in low and golden, the kind that makes any fairway look better than it is. The greens have just been watered. And there’s something that never happens in April: nobody behind you, pushing.
This is the Twilight green fee, the late round. You tee off once the sun has stopped punishing and you play in the best light of the day. The starting time shifts through the season, so it’s worth checking when you book.
At the other end of the day there’s the early tee time, when the grass still holds the cool of the night and the dew soaks your shoes on the first tee. You’re done with 18 before the heat arrives, with the whole day ahead of you. Two ends of a summer day, both worth it.

And there’s the paradox of summer: out of habit, almost everyone tries to tee off early to free up the day. The result is that mornings fill up and the afternoons, when the golf is at its best, stay quiet.
Water runs the summer round
At La Roca the water isn’t decoration. The Vallforners stream cuts through the course and follows you for much of the round, and there are four lakes spread across the property. In winter that’s a hazard you avoid. In summer it’s something else: it’s the cool part of the round, where the air changes and you feel like lingering.
Hole 13 is the best of them. A gentle uphill par 5 with the lake to the right of the green and ducks going about their business on the bank. In summer that lake will tempt you twice: once with your second shot, and again while the rest of your group looks for their ball.
Hole 2, the toughest on the card, is a risk and reward par 5 with the stream down the entire left side and the lake guarding the green. The temptation to go for it in two is there all year. In summer, with the fairway dry and the ball running further than usual, it arrives sooner.
There is shade, and it smells of olive trees
Hole 8 has pines on the left and olive trees on the right, and the scent greets you as you walk past. On a summer round those trees stop being where you don’t want your ball and become where you want to walk.
Same with 15, which tees off between tall trees and opens up with the village showing in the distance. Or 16, a par 3 from an elevated tee where, late in the day, you stop for a second before you hit, because you can see everything from up there.
And 1 starts like few courses do: elevated tee, open view and the Montseny range as a backdrop. Starting a summer round there, with the sun already low, is one of the better ways to start a round anywhere.
Five ways to play the same course
Here’s something you appreciate in summer: from the tee you get five different starting options, numbered 1 to 5. These aren’t five versions of the same hole with more or fewer metres, they’re five routes with their own strategy. Almost 1,500 metres separate the longest from the shortest across the same par 71, and that changes your decisions: a par 5 that demands three solid shots from option 1 comes within reach in two from option 4, and suddenly the question isn’t how to get there, it’s whether you’ll go for it.
In August that matters. Choosing a shorter option isn’t dumbing the course down, it’s playing it a different way: fewer metres walked, friendlier irons, and your head on the shot instead of on the heat. The course still asks the questions, it just asks them differently.
