Starting from zero: lessons first
The most expensive mistake a beginner can make is buying before knowing. That’s why the first sensible spend isn’t a set of clubs but a course. La Roca Golf Academy runs courses every month, and the Beginner course is four two-hour sessions (8 hours in total) for €168: swing, putting, rules and etiquette from scratch, with balls and clubs provided by the Academy. If you get hooked, the next step is the On-Course programme, same format and price (€168), where you play on the real course; for that one you need your own clubs or hired ones.

Practice between lessons
What you learn in a lesson sticks when you practise. At La Roca Golf’s practice centre, with a Driving Range, short-game areas and a practice green, the green fee is €14 per session (€10 at Twilight, from 4 pm). If you’ll come often, the annual pass costs €350, which pays off from 25 sessions a year. Practice balls also give you free use of Toptracer Range, which tracks the flight and distance of every shot.
Clubs: when to buy and when not to
For the first few weeks you don’t need your own clubs. When you’re sure golf is staying in your life, buy a half set for beginners: a professional set won’t make you improve any faster and costs a good deal more. Living in Catalonia? The golf licence
If you live here, a federation licence gives you access to an official handicap and to competitions. In Catalonia it’s issued by the Catalan Golf Federation and, according to its 2026 fee table, it costs €102 for adults over 22 without a handicap and €115 with one (€50.50 for ages 17 to 21).
One detail worth knowing: the licence runs for the calendar year and its price is fixed, not prorated. Sign up in October and you pay the same as in January for three months of cover. If you start in autumn, consider whether it’s worth waiting until January.
