The rest is detail. The official rulebook has dozens of rules, but to walk onto a course for the first time and enjoy it, a handful is plenty. At La Roca Golf, 30 minutes from Barcelona, almost nobody starts knowing the rulebook: you learn by playing, and that’s exactly how it should be.

Whether you live nearby or are visiting Barcelona for the golf, this guide covers the essentials without any solemnity: which rules actually apply on your first round, which ones you can forget for now, and why none of them will ruin your day.

The essentials in 20 seconds:

The master rule: play the ball as it lies and count every stroke, bad ones included

Penalties: water, out of bounds or a lost ball cost strokes, they don’t throw you off the hole

Order: the player farthest from the hole goes first; on the tee, whoever won the last hole

Rules vs etiquette: rules are the regulations (this); etiquette is behaviour (quiet, pace, caring for the course), and that’s a separate topic

The basic golf rules in one line: play the ball as it lies

If you keep only one idea, make it this one: in golf you play the ball exactly where it ended up, without touching it, improving it or nudging it somewhere more comfortable. It lands in a divot, on an awkward slope or behind a tree: you play it from there. That’s the essence of the game, and nearly every other rule hangs off it.

There are reasonable exceptions (ground under repair, a cart path, standing water where there shouldn’t be), but to begin with, assume that the ball is played where it rests. The second idea that holds the game together is just as simple: you count every shot, including the ones you fluff, the ones that fly into the water and the ones that embarrass you. Golf is a sport that referees itself, and for many players that honesty is the best thing about it.

If you haven’t hit your first shot on a course yet and you’re at the stage of starting to play golf, keep these two: play the ball as it lies and count honestly. Do that, and you already play well.

How each hole begins: the teeing area

Every hole starts at the teeing area, and here is one of the few basic golf rules worth having clear from minute one: your first shot is played from inside the area marked by the two tee markers (the coloured balls, blocks or pegs you see on the ground). You may set the ball on a tee peg (the little plastic or wooden spike) on that first shot only, and nowhere else.

You don’t have to hit right up against the markers: you have two club-lengths back to choose your spot. And if nerves get you and you hit from in front of the line, no one is going to arrest you in a friendly round, though it’s worth knowing that in competition that carries a penalty. For your first time, the useful rule is simpler: between the markers and on a tee, the rest is just playing.

What happens when the ball gets into trouble

This is where beginners worry too much. The reassuring truth is that penalties don’t throw you off the hole: they just cost you a stroke and let you keep playing. These are the three usual scrapes on a first round:

Ball in the water. If your ball ends up in a lake or stream (La Roca has several, wildlife included), you add one penalty stroke and play again from a permitted spot, without wading in to rescue it. The procedure is called a drop: you let the ball fall from knee height within the relief area the rule allows. It’s no disaster: it’s golf.

Out of bounds. White stakes mark the edge of the course. If the ball goes past them, the classic rule is to replay the shot from where you played it, adding a penalty. On a learning round, many players simply drop another ball nearby and carry on so as not to hold up the group (a learning-round habit, not an official rule): ask your coach how you’re doing it that day.

Lost ball. You have a short window to search (three minutes under the official rules). If it doesn’t turn up, it’s treated like a ball out of bounds. Veteran’s tip: play a provisional ball before you go looking, and you save yourself the walk back.

A ball in a sand bunker, by contrast, is not a penalty: it’s a normal hazard and you play it from inside. The one rule that genuinely stings to break is that you can’t ground your club in the sand before the shot.

Order of play and the green

Two customs that are half rule, half common sense, and that keep the round flowing:

Who plays first: out on the course, the player whose ball is farthest from the hole hits. On the tee of each new hole, whoever took fewest shots on the previous one starts. On a learning round this relaxes a lot, but knowing it avoids the “you or me?” shuffle.

On the green: once you reach the putting surface, you may mark your ball (with a coin or marker behind it), lift it, clean it and put it back on the same spot. It’s the big exception to “play the ball as it lies”, and it exists so balls don’t get in each other’s way. You can leave the flag in or take it out, whichever you prefer.

The green is also where the concept people ask about most when they get serious comes in, the handicap: the number that lets you compete on equal terms with players of a different level. You don’t need it for your first round, but it will come along when you want it.

Rules are not the same as etiquette

It’s worth not confusing two things that sound alike. The rules are the regulations of the game (what you’ve just read): what counts as a stroke, how penalties work, where you start. Etiquette is behaviour: staying quiet while someone else hits, repairing your marks on the green, keeping pace, raking the bunker on your way out. They’re different things, and etiquette has its own article.

For your first round, keep this one-sentence summary of etiquette: keep pace, look after the course and respect other players’ turns. Do that and you’ll fit into any group, even if you miss every shot.

If you want to lock in these basics with someone to guide you, a beginner golf course turns them into muscle memory in a few sessions, far faster than reading rulebooks.

FAQs about the basic golf rules

How many rules does golf actually have?

The official rulebook from the R&A and the USGA organises the game into 25 rules (the edition in force since 2023), with many sub-sections. But to start playing you don’t need to study them: playing the ball as it lies, counting every stroke and knowing that water or out of bounds cost a stroke is more than enough. The rest you pick up as you go. You can read the full rulebook on the R&A website.

What happens if my ball goes in the water?

You add one penalty stroke and put another ball into play from a permitted spot, without wading in to rescue it. You don’t lose the hole or get eliminated: it just costs that one extra stroke. It’s one of the most common situations on a first round and there’s nothing mysterious about it.

Can I touch the ball during play?

As a general rule, no: you play it where it rests. The big exception is the green, where you may mark it, lift it, clean it and put it back on the same spot. Off the green, moving the ball to improve your position is a penalty.

Do I need to know the rules before my first lesson?

No. On a golf taster session or a first lesson, the coach tells you what you need exactly when you need it. Nobody learns golf by reading the rulebook cover to cover: you learn by hitting shots and asking questions as you go.

Are the rules different for beginners?

The official rules are the same for everyone, but on a learning round they’re applied flexibly so you enjoy it and don’t hold up the group: dropping another ball nearby instead of replaying a shot, not timing the search to the second, or conceding a very short putt. In competition, by contrast, they’re applied to the letter.

Start playing and the rules will follow

Nobody remembers the rules from their first round because they memorised them: they remember them because they lived them, ball in the water included. Golf makes sense once you play it, and the four ideas in this guide (play the ball as it lies, count every stroke, penalties cost without throwing you off, and respect the turn) are all you need to walk onto a course without fear.

Ready to take the step and play your first round at La Roca Golf?
